Lot Essay

The present work is from a series entitled 'The male Bouchers' which Somov conceived and began to work on in May 1933:
I began work on a series of miniature watercolours on the theme of 'The male Bouchers' (nudes à la Boucher). I have many sketches of 'nus' from nature, the largest part of which is with Daphnis. I have chosen many of my croquis and perhaps this series will consist of ten or twelve works. It will be a pleasant, somewhat scandalous ensemble.
Letter dated 7 May 1933, pp. 401-402.
