Anthea Oswell married Ronald Alley, a curator at the Tate and a friend of Goncharova's, in 1955. As Goncharova died in 1962 and, given the inscription on the reverse by the artist, it follows that this work must have been given to Anthea Alley between 1955 and 1962.
The work relates closely to a smaller painting from the Mizne-Blumental Collection in the Tel Aviv Museum of Art, Israel.
