A GREEK MARBLE GODDESS
LATE HELLENISTIC PERIOD, CIRCA 2ND-1ST CENTURY B.C.
Standing with her weight on her straight left leg, her right advanced, bent at the knee and pulled back, standing in contrapposto, her left hip thrust outward, clad in a long chiton and a voluminous himation, wrapped around her elongated torso, then rolled across her chest, around her back, falling over her left shoulder and tucked below her lowered left arm, the taut folds of the himation contrasting with the deep vertical creases of the chiton below, her now-missing left arm originally pinned into place, a strut preserved at the right hip, her delicately-carved head gracefully turned to her right, on a long slender neck, depicted with idealized features, her oval face tapering to a rounded chin, her thin almond-shaped eyes with thick lids, her straight mouth with full lips, her wavy center-parted hair bound in a fillet, drawn back over the tops of her ears and tied in a chignon at the nape of her neck
21 in. (53.4 cm.) high
