FIRST ESTIENNE EDITION which is also the first edition to print the Greek text accompanied by a Latin translation' (Schreiber). Although the title states the contrary, the translation was largely by Estienne, the attribution to Lorenzo Valla being somewhat of a fig leaf. 'Estienne has also included the Greek scholia, which surround the text on the page; he has been able to correct and clarify several thorny passages in Thucydides by his distinctive use of punctuation and parentheses, which was followed by later editors' (Schreiber). Adams T-666; Renouard 123,7; Hoffmann III, pp.551-52; Schreiber 153.
