Lot Essay
This work was composed by Maharaja Krishna Wadiyar in 1847-48 (during the year Subhakrt of the saka 1765). As indicated in the preface, ‘King Krishna has composed the text Caturangasarasarvasva, by name, which is attractive to the galaxy of gems in the form of scholars and to meet the desire of those who are well-versed in the game of chess’. The text then gives details the construction of a game board, the drawing of a cakra (figure) of 144 squares, and the various techniques and tactics of the game.
Caduranga is the earliest form of chess which originated in India as a war game in the 7th century. Its Sanskrit name refers to the four elements of the army: elephants, horses, chariots and foot soldiers, and is similar to the modern game of 'snakes and ladders'. From India the game went to Persia, where it acquired the more traditional form of the game of chess as it is now played. It is known as Chatarang in the Islamic World.
Maharaja Krishna Wadiyar III succeeded Tipu Sultan and reigned over Mysore for nearly 60 years between 1799 and 1868. He was a scholar and renowned patron of the arts, a prolific writer and had a particular interest for board games.
