Decorated with dotted roundel motifs, inlaid with red composition, the top deeply carved with a central floral motif issuing scrolling foliate tendrils

A similar carved ivory handle, although more intricately carved, is in the Tavora Sequeira Pinto Collection, Porto and dated to late 16th century Ceylon (Annemarie Jordan Gschwend and Johannes Beltz, Elfenbeine aus Ceylon, Luxusguter fur Katharina von Habsburg (1507-1578), exhibition catalogue, Zurich, 2010, cat. 25).
