Lot Essay

The present seal boxes are very rare. The very fine workmanship and some of the stylistic features are identical to some found on ivory carvings in the Palace Museum, Beijing. Compare the figures on top of the covers with ivory groups illustrated in Bamboo, Wood and Ivory Carvings - The Complete Collection of Treasures of the Palace Museum, Hong Kong, 2002, no.159 to 163. For an identical treatment of the openwork geometric scrolls see various perfumiers illustrated in Op. Cit., no. 173, 174 and 175.
