ATTRIBUTED TO JOSEPH-EMMANUEL ZWIENER, PARIS, LATE 19TH CENTURY

Undoubtedly an attractive counterpoint to Zwiener's maginificent bureau plat offered as lot 37 in the The Cornwall Collection, this exquisitely-mounted pedestal is testament to the timelessness of Oeben and Riesener's original design. The legacy of bureau du Roi proved so popular among the clientele of the 19th century's prominent ébénistes, such as Zwiener and Linke, that the latter frequently produced furnishings and decorations incorporating Hercules's iconic Nemean lion pelts and entwined cornucopia emblematic of 'abundance through labor', including a commode, large bibliothèque, bergère and two pianos.

A nearly identical pedestal also attributed to Zwiener and retailed by the haute luxe firm of Boudet was sold Christie's, New York, 25 October 2007, lot 339 ($85,000).
