Lot Essay

Sir Joshua Reynolds (English, 1723-1797).

Painted towards the end of Reynolds' life, Lady Smyth and her Children was commissioned in 1787 and was well received at the Royal Academy of that year. The original oil on canvas was sold Christie's, London, 23 March 1878, lot 40, and is now in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. A comparable vase was offered Christie's, New York, 20 April 2010, lot 378.
