"THE INIQUITOUS FOLLY OF THE PEOPLE WHO KILL THESE BEAUTIFUL CREATURES FOR THEIR TUSKS FOR WATCH CHARMS"
"IT IS A PLEASANT THING TO HEAR FROM A ROUGH RIDER ON SUCH A SUBJECT," Roosevelt tells Hodge, who had evidently written his former commander about conservation and protection of endangered species. "I entirely agree with you, but under our form of Government I do not see what the national Government can possibly do. I have the same matter up in connection with the protection of elk from the iniquitous folly of the people who kill these beautiful creatures for their tusks for watch charms. I have sent your letter to Dr. Hart Merriam of the Biological Survey." A fine association of Roosevelt's Rough Riding days with his lifelong passion for the wilderness and conservation.
