CALVERT, Edward (1799-1883), artist. -- Samuel CALVERT. A Memoir of Edward Calvert Artist. London: Sampson Low, Marson and Company Limited, 1893.
Small 2o (368 x 274 mm). Half-title, 45 in-text illustrations, 35 plates on 31 sheets after Calvert. (Some marginal browning.) Publisher's gilt-stamped buckram by Leighton Son and Hodge. Provenance: acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1980.
FIRST EDITION, LIMITED ISSUE, number 73 of 350 copies signed by the author. Calvert, an English wood-engraver and painter, was associated with William Blake and the Shoreham circle of the Ancients. He was inspired by Blake's illustrations of Virgil, though his pastoral visions were inspired by Theocritus and other pagan idylls rather than Milton or Bunyan. The Memoir contains impressions from the actual woodblocks and copper plates, but the lithographs are reproduced from process blocks.
