(Occasional light spotting to plates, mostly marginal, some captions with faint impressions, a few trimmed, two plates slightly shorter.) Second edition of this work on the birds of the famous menagery at Osterley Park; the first edition appeared in 1782 with only 66 plates. "ONE OF THE FAMOUS, EARLY COLOURED ILLUSTRATIONS OF ORNITHOLOGY" (Wood) with plates signed by Willam Hayes and members of his family. The plates are taken from drawings by William Hayes commissioned by Robert Child of Osterley Park in Isleworth, Middlesex, and together "form a record of a unique collection and add some colored pictures of foreign species to the small number then available. Hayes was the first author to record a single private collection of live birds; such a project was not attempted again until 1846" (Jackson). No fewer than seven members of his family collaborated on the venture: his wife Anne, and his children Charles, William, Annette, Emily, Maria and Matilda. Some plates with watermark "J. Whatman 1794." Without the frontispiece and the title for the second part as in the Wood, Zimmer and other copies. Jackson Bird Etchings p.135; BM(NH) II, p.805; Fine Bird Books (1990) p.105; Nissen IVB 422 (variant title); Wood p.381; Zimmer p. 294.
