Later edition, SIGNED BY EMERSON on the front free endpaper: "R. W. Emerson. Montreal, 25 April 1852." Emerson traveled to Montreal in 1852, noting in his Journal that even in April there was three feet of snow just outside the city limits. Emerson gave six lectures from the Conduct of Life series before the Mercantile Library Association in Montreal, 19-24 April 1852. The label of Montreal bookseller B. Dawson is on the front pastedown.
