Lot Essay

One of a series of designs for Ludovico Antonio Muratori's (1672-1750) Rerum italicum scriptores published in 28 volumes between 1723 and 1751. Tiepolo's drawings were engraved by Francesco Zucchi (1692-1764). Other drawings by Tiepolo for that commission are in the collections of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York and the British Museum (see A. Middendorf Kosegarten, '"E guerra e morte": Giambattista Tiepolos Entwürffe für illustrationen der "Rerum italicum scriptores", ediert von Lodovico Antonio Muratori', Münchner Jahrbuch der bildenden Kunst, LVIII, 2007, pp. 93-139).
