Lot Essay

A preparatory study, with many differences in pose, for Robert's Pipers before a Madonna (1829; Musée des Beaux-Arts, Vevey; see P. Gassier, Léopold Robert, Neuchâtel, 1983, p. 323, no. 92). The painting was commissioned from Robert by Casimir Lecomte as a pendant to the Young girl from Procida offering a drink to a fisherman (Musée des Beaux-Arts, Neuchâtel), and was later given by him to his friend the banker Isaac Pereire, at whose sale it was valued at 40,100 FF. Another preparatory drawing for the picture was with Colnaghi, London, in 1999-2000.
