JUNIUS, Hadrianus (1511-1575). Medici emblemata. Antwerp: Christophe Plantin, 1565.

2 parts in one volume, 8° (165 x 98mm). Title and 58 woodcut emblems all within typographical borders, most emblems by Gerard Janssen van Kampen, a few by A. Nicolai, all after G. Ballain and P. Huys. Late 19th-century hard-grained red morocco gilt, marbled endpapers, gilt edges. Provenance: [H. Yates Thompson] -- S.A. Thompson Yates (book plate).

FIRST EDITION, YATES THOMPSON COPY. With its 'exquisite borders', this work by the Dutch physician Adriaan de Jonghe has long been highly admired, Vinet caling it 'un des plus charmants volumes qui soient sortis des presses de Plantin. Les vignettes sont bien supérieures pour le dessin et la gravure à celles des emblèmes de Sambucus'. Each emblem has a legend above and a quatrain below. They are followed by prose interpretations where the author discusses essential problems of emblematic illustrations. The short second part, Aenigmatum libellus, consists of riddle poems. Funck p. 344: 'très élégant petit volume'; Landwehr Low Countries 398; Praz p. 384; Sorgeloos 274; Vinet 847; Voet 1476.
