TYPOT, Jacob (1540-1601), Octavius de STRADA (1550-1612), Anselmus Boethius DE BOOT (1550?-1634). Symbola divina & humana pontificium imperatorum regum. Prague: [s.n.] 1601 [-03].
3 volumes in one, 2° (305 x 95mm). Engraved title in each volume, 2 engraved plates of coat-of-arms, and 149 (of 150) emblematic plates by Aegidius Sadeler , of which 60 are in vol.I, 42 in vol. II and 48 only (of 49 called for by Praz) in vol.III. One additional plate cut down and pasted in on verso of R2 in vol.II. Errata at end of vol. III. (Light waterstaining in lower margin and corner of first title and most of first vol., titles of vols. II & III with one or two light marginal soil marks, closed tear in lower margin of B4 in vol.II, occasional light spotting or light soiling throughout, mainly marginal.) 20th-century panelled calf gilt by Howell of Liverpool, spine gilt with motif of star and half-moon in each compartment, repeated in each corner of inner lozenge on sides, brown morocco lettering-piece, gilt turn-ins (very light fading along front joint of spine). Provenance: J.G. Gesner (signature in lower margin of first title).
FIRST EDITION of this attractive emblem book. While this work is sometimes attributed solely to Typot, it was seen into print by Anselmus de Boodt as Typot had died before it was completed. Anselm de Boodt's name appears on the third title-page. The first volume is devoted to national political emblems; the second ecclesiastical; and the last to royalty.
