2 parts in one volume, 8° (212 x 130mm). Collation: A-I8, K4, A-B8. Engraved title-page, engraved medallion of Christ and 70 full-page copper-engraved illustrations of Biblical scenes after Pieter van der Borcht and Cr. van den Broeck by A. de Bruyn, P. Huys, H. Wiericx. (Without blank B8, marginal soiling and dampstaining.) Contemporary blind-tooled calf, sides with a large central arabesque within a semé of stars and a roll-tooled border, edges gilt (rebacked). Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (bookplate).

FIRST EDITION. A variant issue apparently unrecorded by Voet, which collates as the first edition and printed in the same large octavo format, but with the plates before the borders. These Latin odes by the Spanish theologian Arias Montanus are accompanied by 70 fine emblems; 'the richness of the illustrations... is eminently representative of the Catholic imagery and religious propaganda of the Counter-Reformation' (Sorgeloos).
