8° (142 x 84mm). Woodcut title device, foliated initials and tail-pieces. (R10r with a few letters effaced by soil mark.) Contemporary olive green morocco by Roger de Coverly, covers with wide border of trailing flowers, spine gilt in six compartments directly lettered, gilt edges. Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (ex libris; biographical pencil notes on front blank). First published in 1580, Bodin's treatise on witch hunting enjoyed a huge vogue. ‘Bodin was unquestionably the most original political philosopher who had arisen since Machiavelli and he devoted all his learning and acuteness to crushing the rising skepticism on the subject of witches’ (Yates’s note). (Title with large corner piece torn away and replaced, similar marginal repair to D2, light browning to quire Y.) Green morocco by L. Claessens, covers with gilt and blind frame enclosing a central gilt arabesque, gilt turn-ins and edges. Provenance: S.A. Thompson Yates (ex libris).
