8 parts in one volume, oblong 4° (158 x 192mm). 8 additional engraved titles and 416 plates, engraved view of Frankfurt mounted on verso of B4, wood-engraved head-pieces, complete with blank 6.B4. (Engraved title browned, occasional light scattered spotting, tiny marginal burn hole to pl.153, a few leaves to part 6 lightly browned, short tear just into text on 8.B1.) Late 19th-/early 20th-century roan gilt by C. Smith, marbled endpapers, gilt edges (Rear hinge broken, extremities faintly rubbed). Provenance: J Gomez de la Cortina, Marquis de Morante (1808-1868, small armorial bookplate).
EXTREMELY RARE COMPLETE GEOGRAPHICAL EMBLEM BOOK. Second edition. Each part contains letterpress and engraved titles, with explanatory text by J.L. Gottfried. The plates are views of cities, monasteries and fortifications found in Germany, Netherlands, France, and Spain, but there are also non-European locations including Cuzco (Peru, 7.10), San Salvador (6.36) and Jerusalem (6.21). The plates always contain a moral code in the foreground and are captioned in Latin and German. ONLY 3 COPIES OF THIS WORK HAVE APPEARED AT AUCTION IN THE PAST THIRTY YEARS, NONE OF THEM COMPLETE (ABPC/AE-online).
