Lot Essay

The attribution to Romanelli was confirmed at the time of the 1998 sale by Dr Jörg Merz, who noted that the composition was similar to that of the Madonna of the Rosary (1653) in San Domenico e Sisto in Rome (X. Brooke, Mantegna to Rubens: The Weld-Blundell Drawings Collection, exhib. cat., Liverpool, Walker Art Gallery and London, British Museum, 1998, p. 101).
