DATED 1678
With angular side handles and bands of turned decoration, the body engraved 'Bakwell m Com Derb 1678', with three pairs of verification stamps to the rim comprising a crowned 'CR' , a chequerboard and a a crowned 'Derby'
7 ½ in. (19 cm.) high; 8 in. (20 cm.) diameter to outside of rim excluding handles

Lot Essay

The measure is referred to in The 1997 guide 'Around Bakewell', Sutton publishing Ltd. Under a 1902 photograph of The Anchor Inn on p.13 is the caption 'A standard double-handled gallon measure marked 'Bakewell. Com Derb. 1678' was found in the cellar here over one hundred years ago and preserved.'
