Lot Essay

Armfield studied at the Birmingham School of Art from 1899. An exceptional – and highly underrated - early 20th century artist, he was influenced by Payne, Gaskin and Southall (who taught him the technique of tempera) as well as the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood.
