Lot Essay

Anning Bell was a leading exponent of the Arts and Crafts movement. Best known as a painter in tempera and oils, he also worked in other mediums. He was responsible for many designs for stained glass and mosaic including commissions for Westminster Cathedral and the Houses of Parliament. The present work is reputedly the last work that he ever painted.
