Lot Essay

An illustrator and engraver working in the early 20th century, Herbert Cole was influenced by both Burne-Jones and Walter Crane. His work is closely related to the Arts and Craft Movement, and it is possible that he produced stained glass designs; certainly the present works would translate well into such a medium. Cole exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1898 and 1900.
