Celebrating the magic and atmospheric landscape of the British Countryside, Jefferson creates windows into different worlds imbued with folklore, legend and literary references. Inspired by William Blake, mentored by Graham Ovenden (b.1943) and counting Lewis Carroll’s Alice in Wonderland as one of his greatest influences, Jefferson combines his pastoral scenes with surrealism and invites the viewers to lose themselves in mystic visions of faerie celebrations.
In this painting, where a gathering is taking place, fairies and paganistic figures await the awakening of a woman slumbering inside a snail’s shell. Jefferson has captured the golden light of evening and the colours of summertime flora and fauna resulting in a perfect example of the Anglo-Celtic surrealism that Jefferson embraces wholeheartedly.
