Lot Essay

The reverse is inscribed to J Morton from F Maillaud, dated 1939. There is a paper label on the reverse saying the sitters are Madam Surlél, who was the god-daughter of Fernand Maillaud, and her daughter working on one of his embroidery pictures, that the family has one of these pictures, and that James Morton visited Maillaud in Paris in 1928.
