Lot Essay

The statuette is a modello for the lifesize statue outside the parliament buildings in Belfast executed in 1907.

Pomeroy was born in London and studied at the Lambeth School of Art under Aime-Jules Dalou and Frith. In 1880, he was admitted to the R.A. Schools, where he won a gold medal and a travelling scholarship in 1885. He then went to Paris and studied under Mercie. He is considered one of the leading figures in the English New Sculpture movement.
