Lot Essay

Chess sets of this nature have been attributed to immigrant Yemenite craftsmen who settled in Israel, who combined their traditional methods of interwoven copper wire, later silver, with recognizable Staunton pattern shapes. For further discussion see Victor Keats, The Illustrated Guide to World Chess Sets, Batsford Ltd 1985, page 198, plate 228.
