Lot Essay

The particular seal used by the artist indicates that the work was created between 1684 and 1705. The artist's signature is comparable to example 13d (in Wang Fangyu's Master of the Lotus Garden: The Life and Art of Bada Shanren (1626-1705), New Haven, 1990, p. 252), which indicates that the work was created between 1689 and 1694. While Bada Shanren typically appended after his signature hua or xie, he generally used hua before 1694. Therefore, it appears that this work can be dated between 1689 and 1694.
