Lot Essay

Originally from Shaoxing, Shou Shigong spent most of his life in Beijing and was proficient in poetry, composition, and calligraphy. He also studied seal carving with Wu Changshuo. His early works usually emulated the Mi, Ou, and Hou styles. Later in his career, Shou Shigong began copying and studying steles from the Six Dynasties period. Studying steles influenced the development of his own calligraphy, recognized for its bold, smooth contours that echo the qualities of carved stone.
