When the present owner's family immigrated to the United States in 1950, this painting was among their artworks. He undertands that it was acquired in Shanghai by his maternal grandfather, the statesman Huang Fu (1883-1936).
Huang Fu, born in Hangzhou, was a politician and military general who studied at Zhejiang Military College. He became acting president of the Republic of China in 1924, following the Beijing coup and the fall of Cao Kun.
