This painting is accompanied by a photograph of a lady and a typewritten note that reads: "Nov 15, 1967, At the end of August in 1967, I was vacationing in Carmel, California. While I was on San Carlos Street, I saw Da Qian Zhang's art exhibition, and I really liked his art. Since it was summer at the time, I was carrying a Carton board. The back of the fan was blank, so I asked him to paint something on it for me. He agreed to paint and sign it for me, and I was very happy. Carol J. Evans"
Zhang Daqian visited California as early as 1954-55 to visit friends in Berkeley. By the mid-1960s, although he was based in Brazil, Zhang and his wife spent more and more of their time in northern California. Following an exhibition at the Chinese Art Gallery in San Francisco in 1965, the artist was featured in several solo exhibitions in the area during the next several years. Zhang Daqian spent so much time in the Bay area and he so enjoyed the scenery that he bought one home in Carmel, the Keyi Ju, in 1968 and a larger one in nearby Pebble Beach, the Huanbi An, in 1971.
