A RARE TWELVE-PANEL CARVED LACQUER SCREEN
18TH CENTURY
The screen is finely carved and painted on one side with a scene from the novel 'A Bed-full of Tablets' (Manchuanghu), depicting figures at various pursuits in a terraced palace setting replete with pavilions, halls and bridges, with Guo Ziyi arriving on horseback as officials approach to pay tribute. The scene is set amidst a lush, sprawling garden, the boundaries delineated by a tiled wall, all framed by panels of precious objects and borders of paired phoenixes and key-fret. The reverse is finely carved with a large map of China, Tianchang dijiu tu, detailed with the Great Wall, rivers, roads and mountains, and inscribed with the names of the different localities below stellar constellations, all framed within foliate borders and replicas of famous fan paintings. The upper area of the second panel from the end on the right has a dedicatory inscription indicating that the screen was commissioned by Zhou for the sixtieth birthday of respectful elder brother Dong Fang.
116¼ in. (295.3 cm.) high, 256 in. (650cm.) wide
