THREE WHITE JADE FITTINGS
19TH CENTURY
One is a ruyi-shaped belt fitting carved on the front with double xi characters (double happiness), the hinged lower section carved in openwork as two confronted dragons; the largest is in the shape of a ruyi-shaped lock carved in relief on each side with four characters, zhuang yuan ji di ('may you become the First Scholar') and ji xiang ru yi ('may you have auspiciousness and your wishes fulfilled'); the third is carved in openwork as two addorsed dragons joined by a bar, each side carved with two characters, wu gui ('may your sons carry off first place in the civil service examinations'), and rong zi ('may you prosper and flourish').
