Lot Essay
The author of this work, Nizam al-Din al-Hasan bin Muhammad bin Husain al-A’raj al-Qumi al-Nishaburi, known as Nizam Nishaburi was probably born in Qum in northern Iran, and studied in Nishapur, Khurasan. He was a mathematician and astronomer and worked in the observatory of Al-Shirazi in Tabriz under the Ilkhanid rulers Ghazan Khan (r. 1295-1304 AD) and Uljaytu (r. 1304-1317 AD).
The author states in the text that that the work was commissioned for Mahmud bin al-Ra’is al-Yazdi, that he completed the composition in Rabi’ I AH 711/1311-12 AD, and that he has drawn Tusi’s original diagrams in red and the commentary's diagrams in black.
Some of the later owner's notes read as follow:
1. Ownership inscription and seal impression of Nur-al-Din Muhammad bin Abi al-Qasim bin Habibullah al-Wa’iz al-Isfahani. The seal impression is dated AH. 996 / 1587-88 AD.
2. Ownership inscription of ‘Ali [..], dated Safar AH 1054 / 1644-45 AD
3. Ownership inscription states that the manuscript was owned by Suleyman Durri, the Timekeeper at the mosque of Abu al-Fath Sultan Mehmed Khan (Sultan Mehmet II The Conqueror).
