A rare copy of this prayer book composed by the Mahdi of Sudan Muhammad bin 'Abdillah, 80ff. as numbered, each folio with 9ll. of black naskh script with sudani characteristics, with purple roundel verse markers, titles in larger purple script, opening bifolio within black-ruled purple panels extending to the upper margin, title page with polychrome circular compositions, colophon dated with ownership inscription, in probably original brown morocco with flap and possibly original leather fitted case

Lot Essay

One of the two notes in English appended to this manuscript indicates that this 'Ratib or prayer book of the Mahdi [was] bought by C.J.H from soldiers of the IXth Sudanese Battalion who got it in the battle of El Gedid when the Khalifa was killed 1899 (sent from Omdurman)'.
