Lot Essay

This painting closely relates to four illustrations from an Ottoman album, dated to circa 1620 which sold at Sotheby's 12 October 1990, lot 158. The paintings are of the same size (13.5 x 7cm.) and show a similar single figure standing on a grassy patch surrounded by rocks, and against a relatively simplified background with a tall tree and two sketchily drawn hills. They were very probably painted by the same workshop, possibly the same artist. Other miniatures of the same style are in the Chester Beatty Library (V. Minorsky, A Catalogue of the Turkish Miniatures, Dublin, 1958, pl. 30b). Another miniature from the Edwin Binney 3rd collection, dated circa 1650, is in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (M.85.237.45 https://collections.lacma.org/node/251241).
