Lot Essay

The present bronze is after Michelangelo's famous marble figure of Moses for the tomb of Pope Julius II in the church of S. Pietro in Vincoli, Rome. Michelangelo's sculptures have always been popular and smaller scale copies in various materials, such as bronze and terracotta, have been made almost from the moment he executed them.
