Lot Essay

Shozo Shimamoto (1928-2013) was a founding member of the Gutai movement and began studying painting with Gutai founder, Jiro Yoshihara (1905-1972) while studying at Kwansei Gakuin University. In 1965 Shimamoto made a short series of works called Uzumaki [Whirlpool]. He poured paint onto canvases, allowing the colours to separate according to their different densities.

The work is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity issued by the Shozo Shimamoto Association, no. 1133.
