Details
A PAIR OF LOUIS XIV GILTWOOD TORCHERES
CIRCA 1700
Each with a figural shaft depicting Apollo and Diana, on foliate-clasped S-shaped feet, re-gilt
71 ¼ in. (181 cm.) high; 18 ½ in. (47 cm.) diameter
The magnificent pair is most probably listed for the first time at the Grand Salon of Chateau D'Hauteville in the 1786 inventory and was probably acquired by Daniel D'Hauteville.
Giltwood torcherès, like the present pair, became popular in Versailles and Paris during the first decades of the reign of Louis XIV and enhanced the magnificence and grandeur of the architecture. Most of the rooms in the state apartments included tall candle stands with silver or crystal candelabra on top, placed in the corners of the room or flanking a side-table with mirror above (R. Baarsen, Paris 1650-1900, New Haven, 2013, p. 63). The design of this pair is inspired by a engraving after the design of a stand by Jean le Pautre (d. 1682) in his Nouveau Livre de Termes (V&A, Pattern and design, London, p. 61, fig. 2.3.g).
