Lot Essay

The mark of Peter Wilhelm Polack (w. 1711-1721) is recorded as 'PW' over 'P', in a punch shaped in the same way as the present lot. His father registered a mark 'PPL', the latter letters conjoined. The engraved date '1721' leads us to believe that the present lot is the work of Peter Wilhelm Polack, rather than his father, using a previously unrecorded mark. For an image of the mark, please see Christies.com
