VINCENZO CORONELLI (1650-1718)
Description Geographique et Historique de la Moree, reconquise par les Venetiens du Royaume de Negrepont,… enrichie de plusiers plans & vûës de places des memes Païs,… Paris: Nicolas Langlois for the Author, 1687. 2° (358 x 240mm). Title, dedication, privilege and all preliminary leaves, with index of plates at end, woodcut initials and head-pieces, 73 (of 75) maps and plans, of which 21 are folding. (Lacking a plan of Coron and a view of Turkish cavalry, 1 plate soiled at outer margin, large folding map stained at fold, with a short tear.) Modern calf, gilt-panelled spine (upper hinge rubbed). Provenance: Early ecclesiastical library stamp on title-page margin.
SECOND PARIS EDITION. By the celebrated cartographer, cosmographer to the Republic of Venice in 1685 and globe maker to Louis XIV. The first Paris printing of 1686 contained 56 maps, and the first edition, Venice 1686, contained just 43 maps. Pastoureau, pp.127-129; Piantanida 1335.
