Souvenirs de Constantinople. Paris: Lemercier, [1855-60]. Oblong 2° (371 x 515mm). Tinted lithographic title and 20 chromolithographic plates. (Light crease to plate 5, marginal spotting throughout.) The originals, on which Jean Brindesi worked during the Abdulmecid period (1831-1861), are preserved in the Istanbul Topkapi Palace Museum and at the University of Istanbul. While Brindesi's first work, Elbicei Atika. Musée des Anciens Costumes Turcs de Constantinople (Paris: 1855), represents the government and military dignitaries, this second collection of views captures the atmosphere of the day-to-day life in Istanbul through attractive and lively depictions. According to Colas the work should contain 21 chromolithographic plates, but Atabey and Blackmer both call for the usual number of 20. Atabey 152; Blackmer 207; Colas 447.
