Amsterdam and Paris: Desaint and Saillant, 1754. 8° (160 x 100mm). Wood-engraved head- and tailpieces. (Without the half-title, some variable browning, the title more heavily and unevenly.) Contemporary mottled calf, gilt spine, marbled endpapers (extremities rubbed, upper joint splitting).
FIRST EDITION OF GALLAND'S IMPORTANT WORK ON MECCA. Also published in German three years later, the work comprises five essays, including three translations from Arabic and Turkish authorities, and two eye-witness accounts, of Chios, dated 10 February 1747, and of Sultana Esma's marriage to the Governor of Silistria, Yakub Pasha. Galland, an interpreter in the Levant, was a nephew of Antoine Galland (1646-1715), the orientalist. Blackmer 643.
