Lot Essay

Auditorium or stadium seats such as these were designed as model B1 by Marcel Breuer for the lecture room in the Bauhaus Dessau in 1926. Wooden arm rests, such as in this example, replaced earlier steel rod armrests when Thonet began producing the model in 1930, and consequently changed the model number to B70. A set of three seats was sold Christie's, London, 17 March 1999, lot 63.
