Lot Essay

The full-rigged West Indiaman Susannah, 312 tons, was built in Newcastle in 1798. Owned by R. Cluby and commanded by Captain S. Brown at the time this painting was executed, she was a single decker with a copper-sheathed hull drawing sixteen feet of water, and had had damage repaired as early as 1799. Trading between London and the West Indian islands of Martinique and St. Vincent she disappears from record in 1804, being noted in Lloyd's Register of that year as "Lost".
