Lot Essay
From the climatic and vibrant collages of Xuan paper slabs, to bands and strips of light-coloured arrangement, artist Liang Quan took a new direction in his career after 2000. Such transitions were triggered by an aged and soaked washboard he saw in his grandmother's place in 1999 during relocation. The ridges on the washboard document the passage of time, sparking Liang's Muse to work. In perfecting the rhythm of contours in traditional Chinese ink art, Liang learns that his Xuan paper mosaic collection is the creative vehicle he needs.
Xuan paper is cut with blunt instruments during production. The resulting feathered edge of the paper registers the travel of seasons. Liang Quan, a tea aficionado, seeps paper with tea, and the walnut brown colour starts a slow dance with seashell pinks, pale blues, and willow greens that mirrors the tranquil pace of life. Liang Quan's contemporary ink painting is characterises by a gentle and songlike mood. It imbues abstractionism with tender sentiments and moral characters. The strips of Xuan paper in this piece are either neatly organized, or patched up haphazardly. The soul and mind have eventually found respite in the stillness of time.
