Lot Essay

Robert Crone was born and studied in Dublin. In 1755 he travelled to Italy and most of his works are classical landscapes in a style derived from Claude and Richard Wilson, with whom the artist briefly studied. Crone exhibited regularly at the Royal Academy between 1770 and 1778.
