The International Cricket Match played Oct., 1859, in the Elysian Fields at Hoboken on the ground of the St George’s Cricket Club. New York: Vinten printer, 1859. 8° (186 x 110mm). 41pp., woodcut vignette of a batsman demonstrating ‘the draw’. (Severe waterstaining.) Later green half morocco and cloth by J. Speakman, Liverpool, gilt lettered spine (rubbed, without wrappers). Provenance: R.S. Holmes (title inscription dated Liverpool 6.10.86) -- J.W. Goldman (bookplate) -- P.J.Mullins (inscription) -- purchased from J.W. Mckenzie in 1990. Allen 74; Goldman p.112; Taylor p.58; Padwick 4892.
HOLMES-GOLDMAN-MULLINS COPY OF THIS SOUGHT AFTER MATCH BOOK. The match played on 3rd to 5th October 1859 was the second in a series of four played by the All England XI on a tour to Canada and the United States. The latter were represented by twenty two players against the touring English Eleven who won by an innings and 64 runs. The score may have been relatively unimportant since it was clearly a great social occasion. On the second day no less than 7,400 attended ‘including many Ladies, in fact a more respectable or orderly assemblage was never collected together’. As many as ten pages at the end of the account are devoted to the ‘splendid dinner’ afterwards given to the tourists. The Eleven also won their other four matches by a convincing margin.
